Individual Counseling

Individual therapy is a joint process between a therapist and a person in therapy. Common goals of therapy can be to inspire change or improve quality of life. People may seek therapy for help with issues that are hard to face alone. Individual therapy is also called therapy, psychotherapy, psychosocial therapy, talk therapy, and counseling.

Therapy can help people overcome obstacles to their well-being. It can increase positive feelings, such as compassion and self-esteem. People in therapy can learn skills for handling difficult situations, making healthy decisions, and reaching goals. Many find they enjoy the therapeutic journey of becoming more self-aware. Some people even go to ongoing therapy for self-growth.

Marital and Couples Counseling

Couples Therapy and Relationship Therapy will involve sessions which help to identify your relationship challenges, as well as relationship strengths. We will help you work on issues together in a neutral environment for achieving more effective communication, conflict resolution skills and increased capacity for emotional expression and intimacy. We will work collaboratively with you to integrate your personal experience of the relationship into the development of interventions to be employed outside of sessions.

Children, Adolescent and Family Counseling

Children/Adolescents receive mental health services for a variety of reasons and as children/adolescents grow, they are changing in a variety of ways. There are predictable ranges of cognitive, emotional, and social growth according to the age of a child and kids will experience shifts in their thinking, mood and behavioral patterns as they mature.

Family therapy is a form of psychotherapy that seeks to reduce distress and conflict by improving the systems of interactions between family members. Families are the root of togetherness and at times the most powerful impact on our lives. When families are affected by turmoil all members of the family may feel an impact. Family therapists work with the family system and the relational patterns of interaction within families. This type of counseling views problems as patterns or systems that need adjusting, as opposed to viewing problems as residing in the person, which is why family therapy is often referred to as a “strengths-based treatment.”

Stress Management

Stress is a natural response to external events that evolved from the Fight or Flight reaction to perceived threats. However, our lives have become so busy and full of events that may cause us to react with stress responses that it may become problematic for some people. When stress is experienced over prolonged periods of time, it may result in a chronic condition or lead to anxiety and even physiological imbalances. This is why it is important to seek help if you feel like it is having a negative impact on your wellbeing.

Anger Management

Anger management refers to a process, which could support a person by identifying stressors and learning steps to help them stay calm in situations that increase anger. They may then handle tense situations in a constructive, positive way by learning and implementing coping skills to reduce anxiety or maladaptive behaviors. The purpose of anger management is reduces the emotional and physical arousal that anger can cause. It is generally impossible to avoid all people and settings that incite anger. But a person may learn to control reactions and respond in a socially appropriate manner. The goal of anger management therapy is to teach people how to examine their triggers.

When Is It Best To Seek Therapy?

It could be time to seek therapy if an issue causes distress or interferes with daily life. Distress can mean negative thoughts, feelings, behaviors, or even a bodily sensation such as pain or fatigue. It is important not to wait until symptoms become severe before going to therapy. It may be best to seek therapy if you are often unhappy or feel overwhelmed and hopeless about issues in your life. Therapy can also help if you cannot focus on work or school, experience addiction, or feel like hurting yourself or someone else.

Some people may avoid treatment, and there are many reasons for this. Some of these reasons include:
  • Worry about the stigma that can come with mental health care
  • Feelings of shame when speaking about past hurts
  • Not wanting to acknowledge that anything is wrong
  • Fear that discussions in treatment will not stay confidential
  • Money issues

However, statistics from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) show mental health issues are common in the United States. In fact, 1 in 5 adults may be affected. It may help to remember that therapists are trained professionals who provide support and maintain confidentiality. They are used to helping people work through painful or embarrassing issues. Some therapists also offer sliding scale fees or other financial assistance to people in need. And, although the stigma surrounding mental health can still come up, more people are becoming comfortable with talking about their mental health options with those they trust.

A trained therapist can help people make lifestyle changes. They can also help identify underlying causes of symptoms and provide strategies for changing unwanted thoughts and behaviors. Therapy can equip people with the skills to manage symptoms, reduce stress, and improve their quality of life.
